Begin Your Own Tradition: Patek's iconic slogan was a response to Audemars Piguet

Patek’s most famous slogan was a quiet answer to Audemars Piguet. Almost nobody knows it.

In 1993, AP released the Royal Oak Offshore — “The Beast.” It did something Patek couldn’t ignore: it captured the new money of the nineties.

Patek noticed. Its buyers were aging, its image drifting toward “stuffy.” So in October 1996 it launched the campaign that would become the most successful in luxury history — and it was aimed, in part, squarely at the buyer AP was winning.

Here’s the part that gets forgotten. Patek didn’t lead with the heirloom line everyone quotes. It led with this: “Begin your own tradition.”

Patek gave the nouveau riche a slogan that made them the founder — not the inheritor of a dynasty. It’s a genuinely clever piece of positioning.

Then, months later, it added the second line — you never truly own a Patek, you merely look after it for the next generation — wrapping that ambition back in ancestral humility. Two slogans, gently contradictory, running side by side. One validates your arrival. The other folds it into legacy.

So when the watch world sneers “AP is the new-money watch,” it’s worth remembering: both brands have courted the same self-made buyer for thirty years. They just sell him opposite stories about what his success should look like.
